Orange is a colour that punishes hesitation, which is exactly why it belongs in knitwear rather than anywhere more fitted. A jumper gives it room to sit away from the skin, so the shade reads as considered rather than costume, and the loft of the knit softens what would otherwise be a fairly loud proposition. The ones worth owning tend to lean towards a burnt, rust or paprika tone rather than a pure traffic light orange, because those warmer, dirtier shades behave more like a neutral and do more of the work in an outfit without shouting over everything else you own.
Construction matters more here than with a plain navy or grey jumper, because a cheap knit in a strong colour has nowhere to hide. Look for a yarn with some structure to it, wool, a wool and cotton mix, or a cashmere blend, rather than anything too fluffy or synthetic, which can make orange look closer to novelty than considered. A good one holds its shape at the cuff and hem, doesn’t pill within a month, and has enough weight to drape rather than cling.
Fit should be slightly generous through the body, with sleeves that sit properly at the wrist, since a shrunken orange jumper reads as accidental rather than intentional.
Styling it is less complicated than people expect. Treat it as you would any strong colour and let everything else quieten down around it. Dark denim, black or khaki trousers, and neutral outerwear all let the jumper do its job without competition. Cream, stone and grey are the easiest partners, since they pick up the warmth in the orange rather than fighting it, while navy gives it a slightly smarter, more grounded edge. Tuck it loosely into trousers for anything approaching work, or leave it untucked with straight leg jeans and boots for the rest of the week.
Occasion wise, this is a daytime colour more than an evening one, suited to the kind of grey, low light months when most of a coat collection turns beige and black. It works for the school run, for weekend errands, for casual lunches and long walks, anywhere a bit of warmth against the cold is welcome rather than out of place. It is not a jumper for blending in, and that is precisely its value.
