A good tan mule sits in that rare category of shoe that looks deliberate rather than default, provided the tan itself is right. The colour needs warmth without veering orange, and enough depth that it reads as leather rather than plastic, which is where a lot of cheaper versions fall down. Suede tans lean more autumnal and forgiving of scuffs, while a polished or grained leather catches the light and looks sharper against bare legs in warmer months. Either way, the tone should sit closer to biscuit or caramel than honey, because anything too yellow starts to look dated fast.
Fit matters more with a mule than almost any other shoe, since there’s no strap holding it in place. The heel should sit snugly without gripping, and the vamp needs enough coverage that the foot doesn’t slide forward with every step.
A slightly pointed or almond toe elongates the leg in a way a rounded toe simply doesn’t, and a low block or kitten heel does more for posture and wearability than a stiletto ever will on a mule, which is inherently a less secure shoe to begin with. Anything higher than about seven centimetres starts to fight against the whole point of the style, which is ease.
Styling wise, tan mules do their best work as a neutral that isn’t quite as safe as black or nude, adding warmth to navy, olive, cream and white without shouting for attention. They sit brilliantly under a wide leg trouser that just grazes the top of the shoe, under a midi skirt where the ankle gets some air, or with tailored shorts in the warmer months when bare legs need something a bit more considered than a sandal.
Worn with denim, they immediately look less casual than a trainer without tipping into formal.
Occasion wise, this is a daytime shoe with genuine range, a lunch, a gallery visit, an office that doesn’t require full formality, a long weekend where comfort can’t be sacrificed but trainers feel wrong. They also transition well into early evening with the right trouser, which is more than can be said for most flat shoes. The ones worth keeping are the ones with a proper leather sole and enough structure to hold their shape after a full day, not just for the first few wears.
