I spent actual years thinking brown was the blazer colour for people who’d given up. Sad little consolation prize next to navy and black, the one you settle for when the shop’s run out of everything else. I was wrong, and I’m saying that plainly because I owe brown an apology after ignoring it for the best part of a decade.
What changed my mind was trying one on in a fitting room with genuinely awful lighting, the kind that makes every colour look like mud, and it still looked good. That’s the actual test for a brown blazer. If it survives the worst light in a shop, it’ll survive an office, a train platform, a wedding marquee at four in the afternoon when the sun’s doing something unflattering to everyone.
A good one has a bit of structure through the shoulder, doesn’t collapse the second you sit down in it, and has a shade with some warmth in it rather than looking like it was dyed by accident.
My colleague Priya saw me in one over a plain white shirt and said “that’s doing more work than your whole outfit last Tuesday,” which stung slightly because Tuesday’s outfit had taken me forty minutes.
The styling bit is genuinely simple once you stop overthinking it. Brown sits happily with cream, white, black, olive, and almost every denim wash going, which is more than navy can claim honestly. Wear it over a plain top with jeans for something that reads put together without trying, or put it over a slip dress for the kind of evening thing where you want to look like you made an effort but didn’t sweat over it. Gold jewellery loves it. Silver’s fine too, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Occasion wise, this is the blazer for anything that needs you to look competent without looking like you’re trying to win an argument. Interviews, work dinners, a Sunday lunch where you want to look nice but not like you’re the one getting married. It’s quietly the most useful thing in the rail, and I’ll die defending it now.
