I spent years thinking beige was the colour equivalent of a shrug. The colour you wear when you’ve given up. My flatmate Priya once caught me trying one on in a shop mirror and said “you look like the inside of a biscuit tin,” and honestly, fair. That was the wrong beige though, the flat, lifeless one that does nothing for anyone’s skin and just sits there being sad. I owe the colour a proper apology because a good beige cardigan is nothing like that. It should have some warmth to it, a hint of honey or oatmeal rather than anything close to grey, and the second you find that shade against your own skin you understand why people go on about it.
What makes one worth having is entirely in the knit. You want something with actual body, a proper rib or a cable that holds its shape, not a thin layer that pills after two wears and goes baggy at the elbows by October. Buttons matter more than you’d think too, proper horn or corozo rather than anything plasticky that catches on jumpers underneath. The good ones feel like they cost more than they did, and the bad ones feel like exactly what they are.
Styling one is the easy part, which is the whole point of owning it. Thrown over a white shirt and jeans it does something quietly expensive to an outfit that a black cardigan just can’t.
Belted over a slip dress it earns its place at a dinner you didn’t plan an outfit for. Layered under a coat on a commute it’s doing more work than anything else you own, because nobody clocks a good beige cardigan, they just clock that you look put together without trying. It sits well against denim, against black trousers, against a slightly clashing print if you’re feeling brave, because it never fights for attention the way a bold colour does.
Occasion wise, it’s the one you reach for on the days that don’t have a name. Not a wedding, not a big night out, just the ordinary run of a week that still deserves to look decent. Office days, long train journeys, a coffee that turns into three hours because you couldn’t be bothered to get up. Nothing dramatic. Just quietly, consistently right.
