I spent three winters convinced puffer coats were for people who go skiing or live in Scandinavia, then wore a borrowed one to the school run in February and understood within about four minutes why everyone else looked warm and smug while I stood there in a wool coat that had given up somewhere around minute two. So consider this the reversal apology. Puffer coats, I was wrong about you, and I’m sorry it took actual frostbite fingers to admit it.
What makes a good one isn’t the shine or the logo, it’s the fill and the proportion. You want it properly stuffed, not the deflated version that looks like a bin bag someone’s sat on, and you want a length that suits how you actually live, cropped if you’re layering over jumpers and don’t want bulk at the hip, longer if you want to walk out the door already dressed and not think about it again until you’re home. Black specifically earns its place here because it does the thing colour never quite manages, it goes with everything you already own and doesn’t ask permission first.
Styling wise, the trick is not fighting the volume. Underneath, keep things narrow, a fitted jumper, straight leg trousers or jeans, boots with a bit of substance so you’re not swallowed whole. On top, that’s your one big shape for the day, so let it be the statement and let the rest go quiet.
My colleague Priya wears hers over literally everything, work trousers, gym kit, one memorable occasion a dress she wasn’t sure about, and every time she looks like she meant it, which is the whole trick with a good puffer, it makes indecision look like a decision.
Occasion wise this isn’t a going out coat and it never will be, and that’s fine, that’s not its job. It’s the coat for the platform when the train’s delayed, for the school gates, for walking into an office already slightly too warm and not caring because you got there without suffering. It suits cold, practical, real days, and honestly those are most of them from November to March, so a good black one earns its keep properly, no drama, no fuss, just there when the weather turns nasty again, which it always does.
