Burgundy gets around that problem grey and black joggers have; looking like your bottom half decided to go outside in loungewear the second you step out of the door. It has enough depth in the colour that it looks put together, more garment than pair of pyjamas, but is still soft and cosy enough to do everything you want a jogger to do. With that in mind, it’s important the fit is as good as possible though; because while the colour is working hard, you don’t want your joggers falling at the first hurdle.

The biggest issue with most joggers is the fit. A burgundy pair should slim gently from the thigh to a cuffed or ribbed ankle, without puffing out at the knee, and sit comfortably on your waist; either with a real drawcord or a wide elasticated waistband that won’t twist or slip open after sitting down for half an hour. Believe it or not, fabric weight is important too.

A heavier French terry or brushed cotton will keep its shape and drape, rather than cling to your hips, and will also carry the colour better so that the burgundy looks luxurious instead of faded or cheap. Light, shiny material can often verge on costume territory with the colour, which is the quickest way to look tacky.

Once you’ve nailed the fit, styling them right is all about balancing that heavy colour out. Cream, camel and grey marl all work wonders with burgundy because they tone it down so your whole outfit doesn’t feel too matchy matchy or tried at. Throw on a fitted black top or simple white tee so your jeans can make the statement, then decide how casual you want to take it with the shoes. White trainers for afternoon errands or slightly dressier if you slip on a boot or loafer.

These really are made for those in between moments; running around after the kids, rushing to the airport, weekends where you want to do more than lounge but still feel cosy. When a jogger has a well tailored fit and is made from a quality fabric it earns the right to be worn because at a glance it looks intentional, not like something you pulled off the floor. And that’s really all it comes down to; buying a good pair of joggers.
