I used to think midi dresses were a bit of a compromise. Not as free-form as a maxi, and not as easy to wear as a mini. A little awkward, a little serious, the kind of thing you would buy because it was “practical,” rather than because you actually wanted it. I was wrong, though — until I stopped buying the wrong midi dresses.

A great midi dress earns itself a spot quietly. It does not seek to draw attention to itself with some flashiness or gimmickry. It simply works. You put it on, go outside, and do not find yourself fiddling with the hemline all day long, or worrying about whether you made a mistake about the weather. This is what I look for when I’m browsing through the high street for midi dresses under £30: nothing flashy, no chasing after trends, but wearability.

These dresses work so well because they recognise that the majority of people need clothing that will fit into the rhythms of their daily lives, rather than disrupt them. These are dresses that accept reality (walking, sitting, driving, eating lunch without thinking about wrinkles or clinging). The lengths are practical. The cuts skim rather than constrict. The materials may be budget-friendly, but they do not appear to hate your body.

One of the things I enjoy most about these midi dresses is their utility. For those days when jeans seem like too much of an effort, but you want to look somewhat put-together, these dresses fill the bill nicely. Throw on a pair of trainers or slip-on sandals, layer a lightweight sweater or cardigan over your shoulders, and you’re done. They also travel well. A good quality midi can withstand being packed in a suitcase, a full day of walking, and an unplanned dinner without appearing to have been mistreated.

It’s also comforting to see a midi dress that doesn’t pretend to be an “investment.” When you’re spending less than £30 on a piece, you know exactly what to expect. You’re not buying into the idea of a piece of clothing that will last for generations; you’re buying convenience. And when the dress performs on that level (when it fits properly, can be washed easily, and does not become outdated right away), that’s value in a quiet way.

I have no interest in getting more mileage out of a garment that was never intended to be durable. However, I do appreciate finding reasonably priced clothing that feels non-disposable the instant you put it on. These midi dresses occupy a comfortable space in between the two extremes: they are both practical and wearable, and they get enough use to warrant repeated trips out of the closet.

Ultimately, that’s all I expect from a dress.
