Gingham has a reputation problem and red gingham has it worst of all. It reads too easily as costume, too close to a picnic tablecloth or a school uniform, and that stops a lot of women from ever trying it. We think that’s a mistake, and the right cut changes everything. Red gingham in a fluid midi length looks nothing like a novelty. A fitted bodice with a full skirt makes it feel genuinely considered. The pattern does real work here because the check adds visual interest without any effort on your part, no need for much jewellery, no complicated layering required. It is also, frankly, one of the most photographed prints in existence for good reason. The contrast and the geometry catch light in a way that plain fabric simply does not. We have been pulling together only the versions that justify the category, the ones with a cut sharp enough to carry the print and a red bold enough to mean it. Gingham does not need rehabilitating. It just needs wearing properly.
