For years I was staunchly anti-beige joggers. Grey was chill. Black was chill. Beige felt like giving up. Like those were the ones you pulled on when you ran out of washed clothes. My colleague Priya wore hers once, on her way to pick up a package from the Croydon depot. She told me later that a random guy had asked her where she got them from. That’s when it occurred to me what beige does that grey will never do. It looks intentional. Curated rather than “nothing else was clean”.
The best pairs nail the tone. Something between oat and stone, but not sandy pink, god forbid, or that yellowy sand colour that looks like they’ve been dyed in a puddle. Material is more important to joggers than people realise.
Slouch too low and they’ll be riding up everywhere you don’t want them by midday. Too thick and you’ll start struggling to take them off over your thighs after a single journey with the heating on. The good ones sit high enough that the material has some weight to it. They have a cuff that fits your ankle, as opposed to falling down your shoe. And a waistband that won’t buckle.
On the tops front, beige pairs well with everything. It elevates your other purchases to a higher price bracket. Which is honestly doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
Pair them with a white shirt, top button done up, top half tucked in and you’ll feel like you made an effort. Throw on a beige sweater and they feel booked. Go navy and they’ll make you feel cosy. Slide on a pair of Chelsea boots and suddenly they’re not just for lounging. Messy trainers and you’ve got a proper stay at home outfit.
Gold jewellery compliments beige in a way that silver never will. Don’t question it, just go with it.
They’ll take you anywhere from “smart enough to leave the house” to “too casual I couldn’t be arsed”. Holiday mornings. Working from your local café. The school run. That dinner you want to look nice for but not too nice. They are not wedding-appropriate, and unless your office has zero chill they’re probably not work, but anywhere in-between. I spent far too long being narrow-minded about them. Please accept this as my late apology.
