I spent approximately three years being wholly duped by barrel leg jeans. Convinced they were created solely to convince otherwise fabulous people they accidentally shrunk their perfectly lovely straight-leg denims. Roared this opinion at my sister Priya over a barbecue in 2022 before caving and buying a pair myself eighteen months later when I was bored with how everything looked in a straight leg and promptly messaging her to say I was sorry. She responded with “told you” and nothing else which I thought was only fair game.

Where barrel-leg jeans excel, and thus what ultimately won me over, is that shape creating something a standard straight-leg cannot. That gentle curve from knee to hem gives you enough room that you don’t feel like you need to squeeze into them tighter at the waist to keep them up, without any of the ‘you forgot to iron them’ shapelessness of a wider cut. They sit perfectly on the hip, before narrowing in just slightly at the thigh, then puffing out enough at the calf to sway as you walk.

A pair this shape needs good heavy denim with some structure to it, so the curve can hold rather than just collapse into an unstable heap around your ankles by 12pm. I tried and failed on this front so spectacularly in a pair so light they practically fell off me I still cringe. They went from cute curved jeans to completely flat with no semblance of shape by the time I’d walked to the tube station.

The length is everything with these guys more than it is with almost any other jean cut. You want the hem hitting right on the ankle bone or grazing the top of your shoe. Any longer and the whole look just looks like you meant to take up the hem but ran out of time.

Team that cropped cut just above the ankle with a chunky loafer or a trainer and you’ll get more unsolicited compliments than you know what to do with. Literally. A colleague stopped me mid meeting once to ask where my jeans were from. I’ve never been asked that question in the time I’ve spent buying jeans before or since.

They’re also one of the only looser cuts that are actually forgiving rather than just accommodating. Fitted top, loose bottom will go with literally everything. Throw on a tight jumper, a shirt you’ve properly tucked in, hell even a blazer if you’re going forlooks like I made an effort, didn’t try at all vibes. They are genuinely great for everyday wear because they can do the school run and the Sunday lunch and the hangover noonish drinks just as easily, without having to change in between. After years of jeans that only ever suited one mood or occasion, that for me is the whole reason they’re worth investing in.
