Both spent several years in Italy and made drawings of the countryside around Rome. In this painting he employs a high viewpoint which creates a wide vista. The branches and leaves of the trees, some tinged by sunlight, are painted with the kind of painstaking detail possible on a copper panel. It was probably painted shortly after Both’s return to Utrecht from Italy in about 1641-3.
